The name Smilodon is derived from “two edged knife” and “tooth”. The Smilodon “big” teeth were around 11 inches long. The Smilodon lived approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago and ranged throughout North and South America. Depending on the species, the Smilodon ranged from 120 – 950 lbs. The Smilodon primarily hunted large mammals (like buffalo). Their large teeth were fragile however and could not bite into bone without the risk of breaking.

The Smilodon is also known as the “saber tooth tiger” and is one of the most recognizable and well-known prehistoric animals. Ironically, the “Sabertooth” isn’t really related to the tiger, but rather is related to the cat family (Felinae). Thus to call the Smilodon a “Sabertooth Tiger” is to miss-name the Smilodon.
